Potatoe Plantations

Potatoes are produced almost in all communities of the regional unit of Lasithi, but mostly on the “Plateau”, where 80% of the total potato output of the area is produced over an agricultural area of 1300 hectares approximately.

Potato culture on the Plateau of Lassithi presents the features of monoculture. The potato of Lassithi is famous for its quality and it is addressed to many markets in Greece and Europe. Over the last years, the production remains almost at the same level, and the produce is subject to intense competition even within the market of Crete because of the produce of Mesara or the imported potatoes from Cyprus, Egypt etc.
