Every year, navy clubs organize open-sea sailing races such as J24, Regatta and Laser. Moreover, modern basketball and soccer courts host international matches. Associations of martial arts host world class events. Athletics, marathon and trail running are also very common.

Apart from common sports, for which facilities are available all over the island, there are less known sports to practice. Paintball is very popular in major cities. Similarly, there are shooting, archery and fencing clubs. Towns and some hotels house bowling centers that organize national and international tournaments. There are also many tracks for kart and unmanned vehicles. A 9-hole golf course operates in Elounda, while the 18-hole course at Hersonissos is soon expected to re-operate.

Golf

Golf is a sport that in recent years has developed rapidly in Greece and is continuing to acquire more and more fans. Today there are seven international standard golf courses (18-hole) throughout the country, situated also in Hersonisos on Crete as well as a 9-hole course in Elounda on Crete. Over 1,300 players play regularly on these courses.

The Crete Golf Club at Hersonissos  is an 18-hole golf course designed by architect Bob Hunt. The course is situated in an unspoiled area crowned by the mountains’ natural beauty. Following an extensive upgrade, it reopened in October 2015 and aspires to attract golfers from all over the world. Conveniently located, just 20 minutes from the city of Heraklion and 15 minutes from Heraklion International Airport – a gateway to Crete from numerous European cities connected with direct flights− and only 5 minutes from the beaches and resorts of Hersonissos. The golf course is set in a uniquely beautiful Mediterranean landscape offering an unrivalled view of the Lasithi Mountains and the unique Cretan countryside.

The pleasantly mild climate – ideal for year-round golf and weather conditions, allow for an enjoyable game not only in the summer months, thanks to the invigorating sea breeze, but also during winter, spring and autumn when golfing conditions on the island are at their most excellent.

The Crete Golf Club operates with ultra-modern facilities and amenities. The Club House features a restaurant, incorporating the island’s fine culinary traditions, and a fully equipped Pro Shop. The Club’s training facilities are adjusted to the highest standards and the Academy offers lessons by certified PGA professionals.
